When a card payment is pre-authorized, the merchant sends a request to the cardholder's issuing bank to verify that the funds are available for the transaction. The issuing bank then places a hold on the funds in the cardholder's account for the pre-authorized amount. This hold ensures that the funds will be available when the final transaction is processed. Once the pre-authorization is approved, the merchant can proceed with the transaction knowing that the funds are secured. **
